While this time of year is most commonly associated with joyous and quality time spent with our loved ones, the millions of extra drivers on the road can also make holiday traveling stressful. With this in mind, we wanted to tell you about five tips to make sure you get to your destination safe and sound during this holiday season.
Holiday Travel Tips
Get Your Vehicle Inspected and Serviced
Before rubber even meets the road, you should make sure your vehicle has had all routine maintenance done. You’ll want to check your battery, change your oil, fill your antifreeze, inspect your tires’ tread for wear and tear, etc. For those who are expecting to encounter winter weather while traveling, consider swapping out your tires with winter tires. If you’re unsure of your vehicle’s ability to reliably get you to your destination safely, you should probably get it professionally serviced.
Pack a White-Out Kit
Although it’s easy to believe we would never end up in such a dangerous situation, it’s better to err on the side of caution. Luckily, packing an effective white-out kit is easier than you think. Simply find a large container with a sealable lid and pack it with essentials like cell phone chargers, jumper cables, LED flashlights, warm clothes and a blanket, hand and feet warmers, a first aid kit, an emergency toolkit, etc.
Drive Slowly
Whether you’re driving on the freeway or just around the block, the key to safe driving during wintry conditions is to be slow and patient as you merge, stop, turn, accelerate, and decelerate. With this in mind, it’s a good rule of thumb to add a “safety buffer” when trying to determine how long traveling to your destination will take. Remember: getting to your destination a little faster is never worth risking the safety of you and your passengers.
Drive Defensively
Slowing things down is only one step of the equation in remaining safe when traveling during the holidays. You also need to constantly assess your surroundings and free yourself from any and all distractions, including electronics. Furthermore, consider configuring your ideal climate control and mirror setups before you begin driving to eliminate any remaining distractions caused by discomfort.
Plan Your Route
While GPS has certainly made travelling a lot easier and convenient, it’s best to not rely on it; especially when you could find yourself without service. Before you begin driving, look over your planned route to make sure you’re not going to hit any closures, disruptions, or especially treacherous weather that will impact your ability to get to your destination safely. If things look dicey, make yourself aware of alternative routes you can take. Additionally, take a physical map with you in the event that GPS isn’t feasible. If your route looks especially treacherous, consider postponing or cancelling your travel plans altogether.
